Judging Day Took Place: Sat 22 Sept 2007

Over 30 local entries were received for the 'Beautiful Beach Hut Competitions' as part of the first Festival of Bathing Beauties : The UKs Only Beach Hut Festival! which took place 22-23 Sept 2007.  Those who entered joined the launch of this linear outdoor gallery of seaside architecture on the beautiful Lincolnshire coast, UK alongside the official openings of award-winning bold new Bathing Beauties huts, open-huts, temporary art installations, beach bar and all manner of odd things in beach huts.  More information is available at www.bathingbeautiesfestival.org

Best Exterior Decoration Prizes (in pounds sterling):

WINNER 2007: First Prize £300 awarded to Margot Charlton, Sutton-On-Sea.

WINNER 2007: Second Prize £200 awarded to Marilyn Judd for 'Beach Bums' on Bohemia Promenade.

WINNER 2007: Third Prize £50 awarded to Gerald Gardiner, Sutton-On-Sea.

Best Interior Prizes (in pounds sterling):

WINNER 2007: First Prize £150 awarded to Anna Webster for 1950s Hut, Bohemia Promenade.

RUNNER UP 2007: Runner Up £50 awarded to Mr & Mrs Thompson for Sandcastle, Sutton-On-Sea.

Best Dressed (in pounds sterling):

Dress up yourselves or your hut - just for the day!

WINNER 2007: Special Judges Prize of £100 awarded to Mrs Booth who dressed as a Pirate in Mablethorpe.

ELIGIBILITY AND RULES:  Note that this competition is ONLY open to private owners of existing huts between Mablethorpe and Anderby Creek on the Lincolnshire coast, UK: It's Free and It's Fun!   In all competitions, judges are looking for quality, innovation and individuality.  Thanks to the judging panel for 2007 competitions; Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Mablethorpe, Peter Fender from Lincolnshire County Council and Helen Matthews, Chair of Mablethorpe and Sutton Tourism Forum.  The awards were announced at 6pm on Sat 22 Sept, 2007 on Mablethorpe pullover, Lincolnshire, UK. The Beautiful Beach Hut Competitions and judging panel 2008 is to be decided and news will be announced here later in 2008.

The 4 winners above were selected from over 240 scale models entered by artists and architects from 15 countries in response to the first Bathing Beauties Competitions launched in 2006.  Ideas range from whimsical follies to creative exercises in space, light and line, the first Bathing Beauties competition elicited one of the most exciting responses to any architectural competition this century. 

The lead artist Michael Trainor who conceived the Bathing Beauties project has also designed and permanently installed his own Bathing Beauty 'Come Up And See Me' based on a gin and tonic.

These huts which belong to East Lindsey District Council, were launched on Sat 22 Sept 2007 and advance bookings for daily hire from Summer 2008 will open soon.

Bathing Beauties International Competitions:

Art meets Architecture on the Lincolnshire coast, UK.

Beach Front Restaurant / Boathouse

Over 70 entries for a second international architecture competition launched in 2006 were received to design a Beach Front Restaurant / Boathouse for a site at Chapel St. Leonards, Lincolnshire, UK.  The winning design was entered by:

Robert Cody of Amoia Cody Architects, New York, USA for 'Architectural Lines in the Sand'.

Runner up prize:

Paul Jones and Ceri Green with Northumbria University, UK.

Funding is currently being sought to realise the winning design scheme.

The judging panel for both Bathing Beauties international competitions as above included:

Simon Conder (Architect, Simon Conder Associates), Dr. Kathryn Ferry (Architectural Historian and beach hut expert), Michael Trainor (Lead Artist).  The panel also included Nigel Howells, Chief Executive East Lindsey District Council, John Cairns from Arts Council England, Peter Fender of Lincolnshire Development and Senior Planner Jeff Sardeson

The Lincolnshire coast will be the first area in the UK to see significant re-imagining of traditional seaside architecture - the innovative linear gallery will unfold over a period of two to three years.  The Lincolnshire Coastal Art Project is led by Michael Trainor and part-funded by European Regional Development Fund.  Partners are Lincolnshire County Council, East Lindsey District Council and the parish councils of Mablethorpe, Sutton-on-Sea and Anderby Creek.  The Festival of Bathing Beauties (FOBB) is supported by Lincolnshire Creative Solutions Initiative.
